The day passed slowly, lingering on each passing minute—ending with a soft watercolor sky. As beautiful as the winter sky was, the lord and his guests were unable to witness it. They holed up in the study, pouring over all the research Célestin had done. At least three of them were—Idalia was lost in her romance novel bundled up in a knitted blanket.

“My gods, this shit is a mess. Who taught you magic?” Syntyche cried, holding up one of the grimoires. “This is nonsense! Célestin, where did you ever find this? How could you trust it!”

“You taught me magic, Sy,” Amias reminded.

“If anyone else asks that, tell them someone else did, okay? Say Madam Gertrude in Draven did or maybe Mr. Eynion from a few townships over. I have a reputation to uphold.”

Célestin ignored their bickering, it seemed to be a learned skill based on how easily Idalia blocked them out. He leafed through his papers until he found the drawing he did of the array. He handed it over to Syntyche. She looked over it, hopping up onto the desk and sitting cross-legged. She was silent for a long while, transfixed with the sigils drawn.

“You were able to get this shoddy array to work with no Mana?” she eventually asked, looking at Célestin over the parchment.

“I did. I had access to just a little bit of Mana, not like what you have here. There was a miniscule amount that seeped through—but hardly enough to be useful to just anybody.”

Syntyche leaned forward, studying his face closely. “That is amazing! You must be an incredible natural mage. Having a natural attunement with The Veil is an exceptional privilege—you’ll find picking up on things a little easier if you do. Use it wisely and don’t let it go to your head either like some here would. You still need plenty of studying.”

She clapped her hands together. As she pulled them apart, several handfuls of small items fell onto the desk below her. Bones, crow feathers, buttons, crystals, river stones, keys and the like clattered onto the desk. She scrutinized the pattern in which they fell for a brief moment. It reminded him of a more refined version of the set Auntie Sue used. “My my my! Just as I thought, little mage! You will certainly be incredible one day. I see you resonate with The Veil more than most. Do you know what your gift is?”

“I don’t know. Many nuanced things like that were forgotten during The Closing and I’ve hardly tried using Mana since coming here. I wouldn’t even know what to do with it. Back home I’m the only person I know of who can use the Mana left in the world. There’s not much to compare growth with. Auntie Sue was helpful, once I got her to stop giving me tarot readings, she showed me some old grimoires in her collection. But she couldn’t actually use the Mana around her anymore to demonstrate anything within. She told me she
